Same-Day Dental Emergency Steps: What to Do for a Chipped Tooth, Lost Filling, or Sudden Swelling

September 25, 2026 9:00 am

Dental problems have terrible timing. You may feel a piece of tooth break while eating lunch, realize a filling is gone because your tongue suddenly finds a hole that was not there that morning, or notice in the bathroom mirror that one side of your face looks puffier than the other. At that point, you mostly want to know how quickly you need to be seen and what you can do until you get here.

At Magnolia Dental in Mabank, Dr. Gerard Macy, Dr. Ana Taboada, and our team provide same-day emergency dental care when appointments are available. When you call, let us know what happened, where the problem is, and whether you have pain, swelling, bleeding, or trouble biting. We can tell you what to do before you come in and get ready for the kind of problem you are having.

If You Chip or Break a Tooth

A chipped tooth may be as small as a rough corner your tongue keeps worrying all afternoon, or it may involve a larger piece breaking away while you are eating. Rinse your mouth gently with water, and if you can find the piece, keep it somewhere safe and bring it with you. If the break happened after a fall, a sports injury, or a hit to the face, mention that when you call.

Until you are seen, chew on the other side and avoid biting directly on the damaged tooth. Cold water, air, sweets, or pressure may suddenly make it zing, and that can give Dr. Macy or Dr. Taboada more information about how deep the break may be. A tooth can look like it lost only a tiny corner and still have a crack that runs farther than you can see.

If the edge is sharp enough to scrape your tongue or cheek, dental wax can cover it temporarily if you have some at home. Skip filing the tooth yourself or trying to smooth it with anything from the bathroom cabinet. We can check the fracture and see whether bonding, a filling, a crown, or another repair makes the most sense.

If a Filling Comes Out

A lost filling can announce itself in a few different ways. You may feel something hard in your mouth while chewing, notice floss catching differently, or run your tongue over the tooth and find a hollow spot. Sometimes the tooth starts reacting to cold right away, while other times it barely hurts at all.

Keep the area as clean as you comfortably can and chew on the other side until we see you. Food loves to find an open filling space, especially shredded meat, seeds, or anything sticky enough to wedge itself in there. Rinsing gently after meals can help keep the area cleaner until your appointment.

If you found the filling, bring it along. Dr. Macy or Dr. Taboada will check why it came out and what the tooth looks like underneath. Depending on what is left, the tooth may need another filling, a crown, or a different type of repair.

If a Crown Comes Off

A loose or missing crown can leave the tooth underneath feeling much smaller, rougher, or more sensitive than you remember. If the crown comes out in one piece, rinse it gently, keep it somewhere safe, and bring it with you. Do not force it back onto the tooth if it does not slide into place easily.

Try to keep chewing pressure off that side until your appointment. Sticky candy, crusty bread, and hard foods can make things worse if the tooth underneath is already vulnerable. If you keep checking the spot with your tongue every few minutes, that is pretty normal, but try to leave it alone as much as you can.

Sometimes a crown can be recemented if the tooth underneath is healthy and the crown itself is still in good shape. Other times, decay, a crack, or damage to the crown means a new restoration is needed. Magnolia Dental also offers same-day crowns in appropriate cases, which can sometimes shorten the process.

If You Wake Up With Swelling

Swelling around a tooth, gum, or jaw is one of those symptoms we want to hear about quickly. You may notice your cheek looks fuller than it did the night before, the gum has formed a tender bump, or your jaw feels tight when you try to open. Sometimes you do not realize how noticeable it is until you catch your reflection from the side.

Call us and tell us where the swelling started, when you first noticed it, and whether it has grown since then. Dental infections are one possible cause, and they can spread beyond the tooth. Do not poke, squeeze, or try to drain the swollen area at home.

If the swelling is spreading quickly or making it hard to breathe or swallow, seek emergency medical care right away. The same goes if you are becoming seriously ill along with the swelling. If the swelling is limited to the tooth or jaw area and you are otherwise stable, call Magnolia Dental so we can help you figure out how quickly you need to be seen.

If the Tooth Hurts but You Cannot See Anything Wrong

A dental emergency does not always come with a visible crack or missing filling. Sometimes the tooth simply starts throbbing at 3 a.m., hurts every time you bite down, or becomes so sensitive that even room-temperature water feels sharp. That kind of pain can come from decay, a crack, an inflamed nerve, an infection, or another problem that needs an exam.

Pay attention to whether the pain lingers after hot or cold is gone, whether biting makes it worse, and whether you can point to one tooth or only a general area. You may also notice that you have spent the whole day chewing on the other side without really deciding to. Mention those things when you call so we know what has been happening.

Over-the-counter pain medication may help while you are waiting for the appointment if you can safely take it. Follow the label directions and avoid putting aspirin directly against the tooth or gum, since that can irritate the tissue. If the pain keeps climbing or swelling starts, call us sooner.

What to Tell Us When You Call

Start with the basics: what happened, where it hurts, and when it started. Then let us know whether you have swelling, bleeding, sensitivity, a broken restoration, or trouble chewing. If the problem changed quickly over the last hour or two, include that too.

If you have the broken piece of tooth, crown, or filling, bring it with you. Also mention whether the problem started after biting something hard, a fall, or another injury. We will examine the area in person and see what the tooth, gums, and surrounding structures look like.

Calling first gives us a chance to make room in the schedule and prepare for the kind of emergency you are having. Magnolia Dental offers same-day emergency care when space is available, so calling earlier in the day can make it easier to get you in. We can also tell you what to do while you are on the way or waiting for the appointment.
